Mission Bay
San Francisco, CA

Mission Bay is currently the largest mixed-use redevelopment project planned in San Francisco. The project encompasses over 300 acres outside of downtown San Francisco and is bounded by Townsend Street to the North, Mariposa Street to the South, Seventh Street to the west and the San Francisco Bay.

In the fall of 1998, Mission Bay's Environmental Impact Report was certified and the Redevelopment Pan and other agreements necessary to commence development at the site received unanimous approval from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

With full entitlements in place, preparation for the initial phases of development has already begun in the northern end of the project. The north of the channel area is located on either side of King Street, from Third Street to Seventh Street. Initial development in the northern section includes an entertainment retail center adjacent to Pacific Bell Park, the new home of the San Francisco Giants, which opened in April, 2000. Other development will include residential rental and for-sale units in the northern end of the project and an office or life science building in the southern area of the site adjacent to UCSF's first campus building, which is currently under construction.

Mission Bay entitlements include:

  • 5.0 million square feet of office and life sciences space surrounding the 2.65-million-square-foot UCSF campus
  • 730,000 square feet of entertainment retail space and neighborhood-supporting retail
  • a 500-room hotel
  • 6,000 residential rental and for-sale units, of which 1,700 will be affordable
